December news

The months are going by fast, 2021 will soon be here!  As the weather gets colder please remember to send warm outer wear for you child  (we also go out twice a day for our mask breaks).

We are rolling along with our letters and sight words, the kids continue to amaze me with all they are taking in!  We have 22 sight words on our word wall and 4 more letters to learn!

We will have our winter class parties on December 21st and 22nd (reminder Cohort B will come to school on Tuesday, December 22).

Next week your child will bring home information about a special "note" for you to write and include in his/her snack bag for the party.  Be on the lookout for it,  you will put the special note in the snack bag that's brought to school.

I hope you have a wonderful winter vacation week with your child.  We all have a lot to be grateful for even under these "circumstances".  I am grateful for the 2 great groups of kids I have and all their patient, understanding families.  Enjoy the together time (hopefully there's a little quiet time mixed in as well).  :)

Happy New Year!  2021!

November news

We continue to learn new letters each week!  So far we have learned t,b,f,m,n,i,o,c,u,a,g,d, and s.  We practice printing them on our whiteboards and say the "letter, picture and sound".

We've worked on rhyming and syllables (those are always great to revisit at home.)  Say 2 words and see if your child can tell you if they rhyme or not, you can also say a word and see if your child can produce a rhyme.  Clapping parts out in a word can be practiced in the car, the bathtub etc

We're also learning number poems to help us with the formation of the numbers.  Ask your child to share the poems with you as s/he prints the numbers.  We are constantly counting objects/pictures and I always remind them to use a "system" to help them.  I model crossing out the pictures as I count so I don't count one twice or skip one.

Our Wednesday zoom meetings have been used for SEL (Social emotional learning), we talk about the theme of the month (November is kindness) and also for science.  We have been talking about weather/trees.  On Oct 28th we did a "candy corn" experiment.  I put a piece of candy corn in 4 different liquids to see what would happen.  The kids drew pictures of their predictions. I dropped the candy in the cups in front of the children and then took pictures 6 hours later.  This is what happened...

Pretty cool!  The kids made some great predictions!

The weather is getting chillier please remember to send your child with a warm coat, hat, gloves for our outdoor mask breaks, recess, and for days they have gym.

October news

We've been busy with learning 2 new letters a week, printing them and practicing their sounds.  We've also been counting, using number poems to help us form the numbers and discussing the concepts equal, greater than and less than.  Everyone is also doing a great job on the virtual notebooks!

Here we are taking advantage of the beautiful weather!   Cohort A

Cohort B

Looking forward to seeing everyone on our zoom meeting on Wednesday, Oct 28th!  Your child may wear his/her costume, we'll listen to some Halloween stories/songs, play a "ghost flipping" game and do a science experiment with candy corn!

We've had a great week so far!  Everyone is doing well with following the directions, being respectful (just like Ryan the Respectful Mouse), and getting into the routine!

January news

Thank you for helping your child to bring back his/her "Reading at Home" (RAH) books.  Each Wednesday they will bring home 2 new books.   These books are to help your child work on tracking print, using the pictures to assist with the words, looking at the beginning letter of a word to help them sound it out, and fluency (reading with accuracy, proper expression, & speed).  These books are at your child's independent level, they are not meant to challenge your child but to help build on his/her reading skills and more importantly confidence :)   More challenging texts are being taught at their instructional level (which is what I do during our reading group).  Please send the books back in the bags they come in, these have your child's name on it and helps when they need to go back in their cubbies.
I will be sending home information about RAZ (Reading A to Z) Kids, this will allow your child to listen to, read, and answers questions about texts online.  I want to start with their RAH books first and then give out the RAZ information.  I don't want to overwhelm anyone with all this at once.  This is not mandatory but just a another supplement to support your child.

We have been working on "tapping and blending" consonant vowel consonant (CVC) words.  Hopefully you read the Fundations information and have noticed your child using this technique!  It is very helpful for them distinguishing between the beginning, middle, and ending sounds.  Those middle vowels are very tricky!

We have started "Informational" writing in writer's workshop.  We are writing "how to" books.  We have worked together on "How to wash your hands" and are working on "How to build a snowman".  Eventually students will get to write their own "how to" books!  When writing these, we are using 4 important words... first, next, then, and last.

We will begin subtraction this week!  It will be a big mind shift from addition!  We've talked about how the biggest number is always the answer (sum) in addition but now it will be the number we begin with.

Reminder if the temperature is above 20 degrees they will go out for recess, please send warm outdoor attire when needed.
