October news

We are almost 3 weeks in and the kids are settling into the routines!  Moving their names over for the lunch choice, bringing in notes, getting their snacks, and packing up their back packs are just a few of the things they are becoming more independent with!  They all have a folder to put their papers in.  Please help them remember to bring their folder back each day and if you have any pick up notes (forms, picture envelopes, coupon book envelopes, bus notes etc you can place them in the folder).

They have been working hard on showing me a "calm body" and giving me their "whole body" listening (ask your child what those terms mean).   To reward them for their team work and good behavior they are earning pennies.  Anytime they are working hard, sitting quietly as a group, using great manners, listening when I am speaking, keeping their hands to themselves, lining up carefully without any pushing etc I put a penny in a small jar.  When our jar is full, they will earn a special reward!  We named a few possible rewards, such as pajama day, bring a stuffed animal to school, and extra recess!  I told them that they are the ones responsible for earning the pennies, they need to work cooperatively to earn them.  I am hopeful that in the next couple weeks they will have filled the jar!

We've been learning new letters each week.  So far we have learned the letters t,f,b,m,n,i, and u.   In small groups we are working on "stretching out" words (I showed them a rubber band and how it stretches as you pull it).  They are doing a great job at using their "best guess" spelling.  You'll notice in their writing there may not be too many vowels, we are trying to write down the sounds we hear.  The beginning sound is usually the easiest to figure out then we stretch out the word and listen for other sounds.  You may've noticed on a paper we did together they wrote down "bl" for ball and "ft" for feet.  The vowels will come later.   The kids have been enjoying "Writer's Workshop", many of the kids are drawing pictures at this stage and soon we will try to write some letters to go along with our pictures.

In math we have been working on printing the numbers 0-5,counting groups of objects and making combinations of 5 (2,3/1,4/0,5 for example).   It can be a tricky concept but the kids are doing well!  Sometimes when we work on math I pull pages out of their workbooks and make a packet.  We may not do all of the pages in the packet, if the packet comes home feel free to work on any pages that aren't done with your child.  It can be extra practice, no need to send the packet back.

As the weather gets cooler please make sure you send your child with a jacket/sweatshirt for recess.

Mr. K has requested that you send in a smock for art to protect their clothes when painting.

Stay warm!

September news

We made it through the first 4 days!!  The beginning of the week was so hot and we were all melting but thankfully it cooled off for us!  I'm sure your child was tired when s/he came home this week! The kids are doing a great job with getting into the class routines, learning the rules, and following ALL of the directions I have been giving them!  There is so much to learn and know in kindergarten!  We have been talking about class/school rules and each day I'm seeing progress with remembering them!

Thank you all for sending in the supplies for the class, it helps to make it run more smoothly.  From time to time I may put some items on my wish list.

Thank you for sending your child in with a snack each day.  I told the boys and girls 1-2 snacks &/or a drink should be plenty.  I also told them that if they bring a lunchbox with a sandwich in it, they are most likely not buying lunch.  This may be good to discuss with your child and explain to them that it is a choice to buy OR bring lunch.  At your screening appointment, I gave you a lunch menu (you can access the future menus from the school website).  We do have students with peanut and tree nut allergies.  Please be mindful of what you pack for your child.  We are doing our best to "monitor" the snacks and lunches but your help with this would be great!  We are looking out for the safety of the students.

I look forward to seeing you at Parent Information Night on the 21st, it will begin at 6:30 in the gym with Dr. Bilsborough.

Fun day at the zoo!

We had a wonderful time at the zoo today!  Great weather!  Lots of cool animals!  Many thanks to our chaperones, Mrs. Morrison, Mrs. Sokolowski, Mrs. Allan, Mrs. Kilmer, and Mrs. Powers!  We appreciate all your help!

all the girls in room 7

and...all the boys

We will be having our field day on June 4th from 12:30-2:00.  Please dress your child for the weather and apply sunscreen at home.  More information is in the Thursday packet.  Feel free to come to the field and watch your child!

We will also be having an end of the year celebration on June 19th at 1:30.  Mrs. Morello will be in touch with you to ask if you can help supply refreshments/snacks for the kids and families.  I will have "centers" set up around the room and your child will walk you through them and show you some of his/her work!  I understand work schedules are crazy, it would be great if every child had one parent present so he/she could walk someone around.  Siblings are welcome.  If you aren't able to come, please send me a note or email so I can plan accordingly for your child.

It's hard to believe it is almost June?!

May News

Finally beautiful weather!  Happy spring!  The year is really flying by!  The boys and girls have become so independent in so many areas it is amazing to watch!

Hopefully they have shared with you that we have caterpillars!  They will change into Painted Lady butterflies!  They are in the process of forming their chrysalises and it is very exciting to watch.  There has been constant movement in their cup!  ALL the kids are fascinated watching them!  Once they have transformed we will let them free!  Who knows where they will travel??

We continue to hone our math skills!  It is so fun to work with a partner when we count, add, subtract, use rods and cubes or even the ipads!

We even made "fact family" flowers for spring to tie in our knowledge of numbers when we add and subtract!

The kids seem to be enjoying their RAH RAH books and continue to return them.  They have been working hard in their reading groups!  Many have even been using Raz Kids during free time to help with their reading also!

We also had a fantastic science day on May 12th, on Light and Color!  The helpers did a great job!  Many thanks to Mrs. Oliveto, Mrs. Morello, Mrs. Vazquez, Mrs. Duggan, Mrs. Romagnolo, and Mrs. McAndrews!

Our field trip to the zoo is on the 28th.  Chaperone information will be sent home shortly.
